Hilary Foster, designer/owner of Hilary London

For Hilary Foster, creator of the Hilary London Collection, accessories have been her passion for as long as she can remember. “In family photos, even when I was 3 or 4 years old, I was always accessorized! There I am, in every photo, with gloves and a handbag, or beads and a pair of sunglasses….. maybe it was a sign of things to come.”
After graduating from Boston College with a BS in Marketing from the Carroll School of Business, Hilary started her career as an executive trainee at Saks Fifth Avenue in NYC. Never content with slow and steady, she was the first in her class placed as an assistant buyer. Her assignment? The Accessories Division! A move the following year to Boston resulted in a switch to the wholesale side of the retail business, followed by several successful years as an executive recruiter. Her need to get out from behind a desk resulted in a sales job with Papel Freelance, a subsidiary of Russ Berrie, Inc. Within 6 months Hilary was a regional manager; she received several rapid promotions and ended up as Assistant Vice President of Sales. A brief stop running a wholly owned subsidiary of Inverness Corp (Beauty and jewelry) was her last position working for someone else.
When asked about her career, Hilary says “I was always looking for the right way to blend my creativity with my formal business training. Starting my own company in 1996 was the perfect answer.”
In the early days Hilary’s plan was to be a European importer: to bring unusual creations from various countries to the US market. She quickly realized that Italian quality and design far surpassed the others, and began to devote most of her energy to designing Murano glass jewelry and decorative accessories. By 2000 Hilary was spending 2-3 months in and around Venice, Italy, designing all of the products she imports. Her goal today remains the same – to provide retailers with unique, innovative jewelry and giftware that offers consumers an alternative choice.
